Power Plant Construction in India

Power Plant Construction in India

SPML Infra offers design, procurement and construction services for thermal power plants, across the full range of thermal generation technologies. The same services extend to renewable and alternative sources, including hydro and solar power generation.

SPML builds new power facilities, including large-scale and super thermal plants. It also rehabilitates and upgrades existing plants to extend their working life and increase their generation capacity.

Civil, Water and Balance-of-Plant Systems

A power plant depends on far more than its turbines and generators. It needs raw water storage, water treatment, effluent treatment, civil structures and electro-mechanical systems, all built to work together for decades. This supporting infrastructure is called the balance of plant.

This is where SPML's experience runs deepest. On the 160 MW combined cycle plant in Rajasthan, SPML's scope went beyond the plant itself to include:

  • raw water reservoirs
  • a water pre-treatment plant
  • an effluent treatment plant

SPML's water infrastructure experience in treatment, storage and pumping carries directly into power projects, where a reliable water supply is critical to plant operation.

Scope of Services

  • Design, procurement and construction of thermal power plants
  • Construction across thermal generation technologies, including gas-based combined cycle plants
  • Construction of large-scale and super thermal power facilities
  • Hydro power plant construction
  • Solar power generation projects
  • Rehabilitation and upgrading of existing power plants to extend life cycles and increase generation capacity
  • Balance-of-plant systems, including:
    • civil works
    • raw water reservoirs
    • water pre-treatment
    • effluent treatment
    • electrical and mechanical works

How SPML Delivers

  • Design and engineering: site assessment, plant layout and detailed engineering.
  • Procurement: equipment, materials and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Construction: civil, electrical and mechanical works.
  • Testing and commissioning: trial operation to confirm the plant performs to specification.
  • Operation and maintenance: O&M contracts after handover, where the client requires them.

Execution Models

SPML has executed projects under several contracting structures:

  • EPC: SPML designs, procures and builds, and the client owns and operates the plant.
  • EPC with O&M: SPML builds the plant and operates it for a fixed period.
  • PPP and BOOT: SPML has worked on Public Private Partnership and Build-Own-Operate-Transfer basis.

Project Experience

160 MW Combined Cycle Gas-Based Thermal Power Plant, Rajasthan

  • Construction of a 160 MW combined cycle gas-based thermal power plant
  • Two raw water reservoirs with a combined capacity of 8.97 lakh cubic metres
  • Water pre-treatment plant with two clarifiers of 320 m³/hr each
  • Effluent treatment plant of 154 m³/hr capacity

Bongaigaon Thermal Power Project, Assam (3 x 250 MW)

  • In 2008, SPML won an order worth ₹329.48 crore from NTPC for this project.
  • At the time, it was SPML's largest single order.

Small Hydro Power Projects, Kutch, Gujarat

  • Three small hydro power plants with a combined capacity of 23 MW.
  • The scope covered design, engineering, and civil, electrical and mechanical construction, followed by testing and commissioning, plus 5 years of O&M.
  • SPML executed the project in partnership with Om Metals Infraprojects Limited.

SPML's hydro experience also includes developing infrastructure for hydro power plants in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Mizoram and Uttarakhand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the balance of plants in a power project?

Balance of plant covers the supporting systems a power plant needs beyond its main generating equipment. This includes civil works, raw water storage, water treatment, effluent treatment, and the electrical and mechanical systems that keep the plant running.

What power plant construction services does SPML offer?

SPML offers design, procurement and construction of thermal power plants, including large-scale and super thermal facilities. It also takes on hydro and solar power generation projects, rehabilitation and upgrading of existing plants, and civil, water and balance-of-plant systems.

What is a combined cycle gas-based power plant?

A combined cycle plant generates electricity with a gas turbine, then uses the hot exhaust gases to produce steam that drives a second turbine. Using the same fuel twice makes it more efficient than a simple gas turbine plant.

Has SPML built hydro power plants?

Yes. SPML has worked on hydro power infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Mizoram and Uttarakhand. It was also awarded three small hydro power plants with a combined capacity of 23 MW in Kutch, Gujarat.

Does SPML provide operation and maintenance for power plants?

Yes. The Kutch small hydro power project, for example, includes 5 years of operation and maintenance.
